Mr Marsh is a graduate of Brigham Young University and earned a degree in studio art. Presently, he is an instructor at Mt Ridge Middle School in Highland.

Acrylics With Angie

The American Fork Arts Council is sponsering a beginning class on painting with acrylics. The instructor is Angie Player. We've seen her talent with Water Color. I'm very excited to try out her Acrylics class.

I hope a new class will be scheduled soon but it probably won't happen until after Steel Days.

Congrats to the water color ladies

Sisterhood and history will soon be on display in American Fork.

The visual arts department of the American Fork Arts Council has been chosen by UTA to paint a mural depicting the history of the city. The art will be displayed at a new bus stop at 400 North and 900 West.

The area's history from ancient to modern will be depicted, including Fremont petroglyphs, pioneer log cabins, Historic American Fork City Hall, and even the much lauded American Fork High School Band.

"We decided what was important in American Fork and painted it," said artist Merianne Nelson, part of a group of women who have met weekly to paint for more than a decade.

The women affectionately call themselves "Sydney's Girls" in honor of long-time arts volunteer Sydney Thomas, who spends much of her time, without pay, helping organize community arts events.

The women were chosen to paint the mural after Thomas entered them in a UTA contest.

"The ladies were here painting and they decided they would like to do it," Thomas said. "There were seven or eight that pooled their strengths and decided what to put on the mural."

Artist Diane Seabring said the work is group therapy. A former American Fork resident who now lives in Genola, she drives more than an hour each way to attend the weekly painting sessions.

"We've been through deaths of spouses, illness, surgery; we are a tough group," she said. "We are a sunshine group of ladies."

"We enjoy each other and we bring a sense of belonging," said artist Arlene Newcomb. "We all take art very seriously. We like to get together and enjoy each other but yet we still get to do our art and support each other, and that is not something we get to do unless we are in this group."

The women said they hope their mural will remind passers-by of how far the city has come in its history, how far back that history stretches, and how much community pride and effort has gone into making American Fork what it is today.

The community-created mural program is "a new program, we just barely launched it," said Gerry Carpenter, UTA spokesman. Murals in several counties will be installed in upcoming weeks.

"The idea is that it is a community art collection, something that improves the bus stops to make them more aesthetically pleasing and attractive, and they tend to deter vandalism and graffiti."

The "Sydney's Girls" informal painting group meets each Tuesday on a come-as-you-can basis from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee is $10 for 16 hours of painting, and all mediums are welcome. Watercolor classes will begin on June 19 and cost $25 for two three-hour classes. For more information, call the American Fork Arts Council office at (801) 763-3081.

Christmas in the Rotunda

Call for entries.

The American Fork Art Council/Visual Art Board is inviting boys and girls in the community to enter the annual "Christmas in the Rotunda" art contest which will be held in the rotunda of the American Fork Library during the month of December.

Children ages 5 to 12 are eligible to enter one picture.

The theme for the entry must tell about a seasonal song that we hear or sing during the winter or Christmas season.

There is no registration fee.

All children will receive a participants ribbon. A "Best of Show" entry will be chosen from all the entries and receive a rosette and cash prize. The judges will choose twenty entries and they will be rewarded a ribbon of excellence and a five dollar bill.

Media can include: black and white or color drawing, watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic, or photo.

Artwork must be matted on cardstock or framed.

Registration day is monday, November 30th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. In the American Fork Library. Registration forms are available in local schools, The library, City administration building, The fitness center and the American Fork Art Council office.

Art as Therapy

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process of art is both healing and life-enhancing. The American Medical Association and Health Professions Network state that art therapists use drawing, painting, and other art processes to assess and treat clients with emotional, cognitive, physical, and/or developmental needs and disorders. They use the creative process to help their clients increase insight and judgment, cope better with stress, work through traumatic experiences, increase cognitive abilities, have better relationships with family and friends, and to just be able to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of the creative experience.

Art therapists have generated many specific definitions of art therapy, but most of them fall into one of two general categories. The first involves a belief in the inherent healing power of the creative process of art making. This view embraces the idea that the process of making art is therapeutic; this process is sometimes referred to as art as therapy. Art making is seen as an opportunity to express oneself imaginatively, authentically, and spontaneously, an experience that, over time, can lead to personal fulfillment, emotional reparation, and recovery (Malchiodi, 2006).

The second definition of art therapy is based on the idea that art is a means of symbolic communication. This approach, often referred to as art psychotherapy, emphasizes the products-- drawings, paintings, and other art expressions--as helpful in communicating issues, emotions, and conflicts. The art image becomes significant in enhancing verbal exchange between the person and the therapist and in achieving insight; resolving conflicts; solving problems; and formulating new perceptions that in turn lead to positive changes, growth, and healing. In reality, art as therapy and art psychotherapy are used together in varying degrees. In other words, art therapists feel that both the idea that art making can be a healing process and that art products communicate information relevant to therapy are important (Malchiodi, 2006).

Angie's class did the color wheel and we all painted aspens using various resist techniques

In Mary Ann's class we learned a new technique 'wipe out' where you layer color on the paper and then remove paint to create the image. I think it is less intimidating than traditional painting. Here are some of the paintings we created using this technique. What do you think?
